School’s Out

Timeline

Thinking about how happy it was to be a kid this time of year, with Christmas arriving and school being out and I ran across this old 35mm film image I shot years ago. It made wonder how long this school had been “out” and were all the kids celebrating Christmas with their kids and grand kids by now.

I call it Timeline because it reminds me of time marching across the wall as the weather and nature in general has slowly moved into the room. It looks as if the vines are reaching in to see if they can grab a piece of that broken chalkboard. All the chalkboards in this school were frosted glass painted black on the back and were obviously favorite targets of vandals. Maybe some folks got in and broke the chalkboard to get even for earlier “homework” assignments they had issues with.

Man vs Machine

Man Vs. Machine

Winter is not quite here but you know this is coming.   The time when we will have to lookout for sliding vehicles and slippery ground, specially when our paths cross like you see in the image.

I shot this looking out our condo window and was struck by the simple pattern of “crossed paths”.

UT College of Pharmacy

This is a view of the atrium lobby space at the new University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy on Madison avenue in downtown Memphis, Tn.  The college was designed by the joint venture of  brg3s and EFTC and built by Inman-EMJ, all of Memphis.  It  creates an open airy volume while providing  visually connected yet private areas at the same time.

I enjoyed seeing the display of old wooden mortar and pestles  as well.  They are in the glass case in the wall on the left.  You can zoom in and see them in more detail by clicking on the image, which will open a separate viewer.

UFO

This is one of my last  images shot traditionally with a Shen Hao 4×5 view camera using Fujichrome Velvia 100 transparency film.  The color has not been enhanced in any way.  I carried the original transparency with me to art shows just for proof!  It is a view of the bottom of an old work boat with remnants of blue bottom paint on the rusty cast iron keel and brown rotten wood.

I title it UFO because the dark spot reminds me of a saucer shape in a blue sky hovering over a lake with the far shoreline rising in the background.

Influences

There are things that influence our view of life every day. Some are bigger than others and some are smaller. Here is a photo of a “small” thing that has a “big” influence on how my day goes. She is a little rascal. Her name is Jazz and she carries a lot of weight for only being 5 lbs.

Day 1

I have been sort of wandering in my interest and efforts lately.  I need to focus and I am thinking that making myself sit down at this blog everyday may help that.  I have no idea at this point what shape it will take and can only imagine the variety of posts that will show up.  If you intend to follow it, please have patience as I evolve, since writing is typically a painful process for me.  It will feel like I am working in the boiler room at Sears Crosstown which I was lucky enough to shoot recently. (shown below, more to come)

You can view more of my commissioned architectural work by clicking HERE and other more recent work on request.

I have also posted a photo of my “review committee” who is keeping their eyes on me …….. specially that creepy guy second from left.
